Crackers.. and Deepavali...

I saw this on Sify..
Crackers
Just reading the list of crackers makes me smile.. I am waiting to burst the crackers on Deepavali..
Yes, I know about pollution.. But I am hoping that one day in a year can be excused.. And also I am conscious of the environment on all the other days.. My favorites are the ones that just light up in all splendid colors.. Not the ones causing a whole lot of sound.
And in the last few years, there have been really innovative crackers.. Not just the plain old rocket of earlier.. Some of these are brilliant..
My brother is the expert on selecting the good ones and I have asked him to do the same this year also..
Looking forward to my Deepavali trip to Chennai

I was fascinated with the way Malayalees celebrate Vijayadasami..
The books are all sent to the temple a day before Saraswati pooja. The books are then placed in front of Goddess Saraswati in the temple and there the puja is performed. On Vijayadasami, kids starting their learning are made to sit in front of the Goddess and the namboodhari writes "Hari Sri Ganapathaya namaha" on the kid's tongue. The kid is then made to write the same on rice using his hand.
When I was browsing through the TV channels, I saw that in Kerala, even Christians beleive in this and a lot of the Christians had taken their kids to the church where the priest was repeating the same procedure.

I am trying to do a lot of things and so no time to post in the last few days..
I am supposed to learn a few things on the functional side am trying to read all the documents that I can. Unfortunately, the more I think that I have only 10 more days for this, the less gets into my head.. Its just like in school before the history exam !! The more I thought about it, the less went into my brain !
I have to run behind my builder and try to finish things on that front..and this is the worst of all the things I have to do.. People complain about government offices !! They seem like heaven compared to what these guys do to me !!! Its an endless loop..
customer care executive -> site engineer -> chief engineer -> customer care manager -> customer care executive.
and even if you send them stinkers and tell them that this is not the way to handle the customer.. they simply dont care..
The other day, I called the site engineer and he banged down the phone saying "Wrong Number"
I cannot imagine a scene where I do that in my job.. I will be jobless the next day !

Builders Reign

In Bangalore curently, its a builder regime.. They rule.
I am having so many problems with my builder that I can have a seprate blog just for that.
And its not just me.. there are otheres I know who are having simlar problems.. Its just varying degrees.
With the real estate market the way it is in Bangalore, things can only get worse.
When I ask the builder what happened to customer service; they have no answer.. simply because they dont care. There are 10 people waiting behind me to buy the same apartment at a higher price!
More on this later..

Outsourcing days numbered ?

One of the blogs in cio.com - Bharati Televentures outsourced their hardware, software and services to IBM in France and United States.
Since salaries here are increasing at the rate of 20% annually, some companies in India are outsourcing their operations.
Several African nations are getting into the outsourcing game and analyst Phil Fersht, The Yankee Group predicts that India's outsourcing days are numbered.

J.K.Rowling has revealed that one more character will be killed in "Half Blood Prince". This has set off a whole new debate on who it could be.
Since it was one of the "good" guys last time, I am hoping that she kills one of the death eaters this time around.. Personally, I would like it to be Lucius Malfoy.. But due to the huge success of this character in the movie version, I doubt it could be that.
Anyway, she will keep us all guessing till the book comes out..

Why do most movies portray cancer patients as dying ?
I think science has improved a lot since of the days of when cancer meant sure death..
I think movies are one major reason why when people hear the word CANCER, they think that its the end of life..
It is not... !!!! There's life before cancer, life with cancer and life after..
So, people in the movie industry, please change your storylines to get in tune with the times.
Why do we get addicted to TV Serials?
When my mom was here, she used to watch serials on Sun TV between 9 and 10 at night. Since I used to watch these with her, I got hooked to them. Now, I see them everyday. I am still at office and I am wondering what is happening in the serial now... And since its a friday, there will some major build up!
I keep cribbing about how pathetic the serial is .. but still watch it! Now, its more of a habit..How do I break out of this?
Two of my all time Cartoon favorites
1. Dilbert - for the simple reason that I can identify with this totally. Scott Adams has created one of the all time hits of the century. Some of the suggestions for Dilbert's Ultimate House are hilarious. Take a look at http://www.dilbert.com/comics/dilbert/duh/

2. Calvin and Hobbes - Amazing !! Calvin simply rules.. A sad thing that Bill Watterson has retired..

Rajni's new film is Chandramugi.. not Jaggu Bhai..
This was not a surpising news.. What is surprising is that this is based on the Malayalam movie "Manichitrathazhu". This movie is considered a classic and Shobana has won the National award for this.
I wonder how a typical Rajni movie could be based on this where the girl's character plays a very important role. How will this story be adapted to suit the needs of Rajni fans ?
But if the movie is to be remade in Tamil and the same effect has to be there, probably Kamal would have been a better choice.
Most of the working mothers I know have a crazy schedule. Wake up by 5 - 5.30, cook breakfast and lunch , get their kid ready for school, pack lunches for the enire family and finally get to their office. On any particular day, they cant say "I will eat outside today as I am too tired to cook" or " I need a break today" as they have to pack lunch for their kid anyway. What a life..
I wonder whats the life of working father like ?

I have been using Opera and Firefox recently and these seem to be far better than IE. The download speeds in Opera are unmatched. Also, they seem to have fewer security holes than IE
